I saw this thing on my way home the other day. its home base is on my commute route. There is always something of interest parked out front.

Works pretty well, actually. Clearly the owner wants the attention. There’s no historic precedence of Gulf livery on a Mercedes, is there?

Looks like it was actually on the GT40 before the 917.
“The story of ‘Gulf Racing’ is unique and stretches back to the 1930's, but it was in the 1960's that the distinctive blue and orange livery became prominent and the iconic brand truly started to form.
In 1966 Grady Davis, vice-president of Gulf Oil bought himself a Ford GT40 and formed a lasting friendship with John Wyer. Nine eventful years followed with arguably the most successful commercial partnership in racing history. With Ford GT40's, Porsche 917's, three world championships, three outright victories at Le Mans and an association with some of the world’s greatest drivers - this was the golden era of sports car racing.”

Not even mad about my being wrong. Both my favorite automakers ran the best livery after all. ^_^

I definitely wasn’t saying that Porsche was the wrong answer - it’s definitely tied more to that marque than any other. Just was interesting to me that it was on a Ford first.
Definitely no history of it (that I can find) on a Mercedes. There’s a reason I prefer to see it on Porsches and Ford GTs!
